How to Wear a Maang Tikka: A Simple Style Guide

A maang tikka is a small headpiece worn at the centre parting of the hair, with a chain that runs back to a hook or pin and a pendant that rests on the forehead. It is one of the most recognisable pieces of South Asian jewellery, and one of the simplest ways to make an outfit feel complete. If you have never worn one before, this guide covers where it sits, how to secure it and how to pair it with different hairstyles.

Where does a maang tikka sit?

The chain lies along the centre parting, and the pendant rests just below the hairline, around the middle of the forehead. The pendant should sit comfortably and not press on the skin. If it feels too heavy or hangs too low, shorten the chain by moving the hook further forward in your hair.

How to put on a maang tikka step by step

  1. Make a clean centre parting from the front of your hairline to the crown.
  2. Place the pendant at the centre of your forehead, just below the hairline.
  3. Run the chain back along the parting and secure the hook at the crown, about a hand's width from the front.
  4. Pin it in place. Slide a hairgrip through the hook so the tikka stays put even when you move or dance.
  5. Check from the side and the front. The chain should lie flat and the pendant should be centred.

Hairstyles that suit a maang tikka

  • Low bun or braid: a classic choice, because the parting stays neat and visible.
  • Loose waves: pin the hook firmly so the chain does not slip when your hair moves.
  • High ponytail: works well with a lighter pendant that does not tug at the hairline.
  • Dupatta or veil: pin the tikka first, then arrange the fabric over the back of the head so the pendant stays visible.

Choosing a tikka that suits your face

A longer, crescent-shaped pendant elongates a round or short face, while a round or flower-shaped pendant softens a longer face. If you plan to wear large earrings, choose a tikka with a smaller pendant so that the two pieces do not compete. If your earrings are quite plain, a statement tikka with bead drops makes a strong centrepiece.

Matching your tikka with your outfit

Pick one accent colour from your outfit and echo it in the bead drops of your tikka. Neutral tones such as pearl and champagne go with almost everything, while a strong colour such as emerald, red or teal works well with a simple outfit. You can also choose a jhumka earring and tikka sets so the earrings and tikka are designed to be worn together.

Tips for wearing a tikka all day

  • Use two hairgrips instead of one for long events.
  • Pin it after you finish your make-up and hairspray.
  • Carry a spare grip in your bag, in case the hook needs adjusting.
  • Store the tikka flat in a soft pouch so the chain does not tangle.
